Budget-Friendly Journey - Making the Most of your Products

Let's face it, times are hard and not everyone is a billionaire YET. Some of us are students, budding entrepreneurs, mothers and the like. We just don't have money to throw around on 6 bottles, tubs or jars of product for each step of our regimen. So how do you make-do with a few products and still have a successful hair journey? Milk those MUHGS for all they are worth!

Here are a few tips:

  1. If you find it too expensive to purchase a steamer but really want the benefits of steaming, let your bonnet dryer double as a steamer by grabbing some wet towels and a few plastic caps. Read more about DIY steaming here.
  2. Although many claim that conditioners should not be left on your hair, I beg to differ. Experiment with your regular conditioner (and even your deep conditioner) for leave-ins as well as for moisturizing.
  3. Many of us on hair journeys have a barrage of oils locked up under our bathroom sinks that we rarely ever use. We buy every one that gets a good review. Do we really need it? NO! Buy an oil (based on your individual hair needs) like coconut, grapeseed or castor oil which has a plethora of functions, causing you to need only one. Use it for pre-pooing, diluting shampoos, adding to your deep conditions, oil rinsing, sealing etc etc!
  4. Also, for those like myself who like to mix and match products, add an egg to a moisturizing deep treatment for a kick of protein when your hair is in need of some strengthening. Half an avocado will do the trick too, or if you are feeling really adventurous, two spoonfuls of full fat mayo or some Greek yogurt.
  5. Many on hair journeys also incorporate ACV (apple cider vinegar) and aloe vera juice in their reggies. If this speaks to you, go ahead and use it for cleansing/ clarifying your hair, addressing porosity, and even in a moisturizing spritz.

Bonus: Here's a quick post on how to stretch your products.

Finally, let me say that 1) you don't need pricey products to have long, strong, sexy hair. Sometimes less expensive products work just as well or even better. Find a few that your hair loves and that love it back. 2) Hopping on every trend will break the bank and quite possibly your strands! Stick to what you know works for you. 3) Try DIYing a few products from things you already have in your pantry every once in a while. It won't cost you any extra pennies and I bet your hair will benefit.

How do you achieve a budget friendly regimen/ hair journey?

XOXO,
Abbi

  1. once again with the amazing tips!
i used to be such a product junkie - buying any and everything someone recommended.
and, just like you said, i ended up with a cabinet full of oils and lotions and potions that i never used.
you really just have to find what works for you!
    and DIY is great!

    1. haha Thanks! I don't know if I'd say I was a product junkie, but I certainly had many products that I didn't use. When I started narrowing down, the whole journey seemed easier and less overwhelming. Cheers to simplifying life and saving cash!
